Project Risk Management: Concept of Risk and Best Practices for Risk Management
Introduction
In this blog, we are going to talk about Project Risk Management and many good practices that can be done to manage risks in our projects. The project manager and team members need to be able to manage and control the risks that occur throughout the project. It is also essential to be able to solve the problems that occur while taking risks. With being able to manage the risks that occur throughout the project, the project manager and team members can accomplish more tasks at a faster rate and also produce a higher quality project as a result. So, now with a little bit of background information, I will dive into What Is Project Risk Management and then later dive into strategies and techniques on being able to manage risks effectively.
What is Project Risk Management

Team AdaptiveWork
Project Risk Management is being able to identify, plan, and manage a potential risk that might occur in the project in the beginning stages of the project. Important skills that come into play with Project Risk Management are being able to plan for risks that can cause the budget to go over or being and also being able to plan for these risks so that the project can be done on time. With being able to create a plan, it will be easier for the project manager to take the proactive steps to be able to identify project risks that can impact the project and make sure that they don’t turn into a project issue which has a negative impact on the success of the project. Now that I provided some background information on Project Risk Management, I will discuss the six steps that occur with Project Risk Management.
Six Steps of Project Risk Management

Ingrid Horvath
Identify- This is the first step in Project Risk Management. This step helps with putting a plan in place that helps with being able to identify the risks that are going to occur throughout the project so that the project can be more well planned. This includes brainstorming with the project team and talking to stakeholders.
Analyze- After being able to identify the risks, the next step is to analyze the impact of the risk. Important factors to analyze are the impact and also the likeliness of them. The impact is very important, because this specific step involves having an understanding on how it's going to impact the timeline, budget, and quality of the result. Being able to do these steps helps the project team plan tasks and mechanisms in the project to reduce and prevent these risks from occurring.
Prioritize- Next step is to prioritize the risks that occur. The main purpose of this step is to see which risk takes the most priority by looking at the probability and impact of the risks and prioritizing the risks that have the highest of both.
Assign- Next, we have to assign a risk to a certain risk manager that can stay on top of the risks and also recommend someone for developing a plan on addressing the risk
Monitor- After assigning managers to each risk, next is to be able to monitor each of these risks closely, so nothing really drastically bad happens. Ways to do that is to send updates to the team about the status of the risk and also to frequently meet with the risk manager.
Respond- Finally when a risk starts to occur, the best course of action is to immediately respond to that risk. With the use of a risk management plan, the better prepared you are with responding to the risk that has occurred.
Next we will talk about three Important types of project risks that concur which are the Cost risk, Schedule risk, and Technology risk.
Three Important Types of Project Risks that Occur
Cost Risk: Cost risk is the type of risk that occurs in the project, which occurs because of not very great planning and estimating the cost of the budget. With this occurring, the project is more likely to exceed the budget causing insufficient funds to complete it.

Schedule Risk: This is the type of risk that occurs when the tasks take longer than anticipated, and can have an effect on cost risk by the increase of costs and also end up delaying the timeline of the project a lot. The main cause of this risk to occur is not great planning of the project.

Performance Risk: Performance Risks occur when the project won’t be able to meet the specifications and requirements of the project, and can end up with a project incomplete and money lost. The harder part with this type of risk is that cost risk and schedule risk don’t affect it.

Now that we went over the different types of project risk, we are going to talk about ways to avoid these risks from occurring.
Ways to Avoid these risks from Occurring
Use A Risk Register to Identify Risks

Peter Landau
A risk register is a type of log for project managers to be able to record their risks in the beginning of the project and also as new ones come throughout the course of the project. The type of information that is stored in a risk register are the plans on how to deal with them to be able to assess their severity and their frequency. This helps project managers organize the risks in a planned structure so that it is easier to deal with them.
Use a Project Management Software
Another way to avoid risks from occurring is to use a project management software. With project management softwares being able to outline the tasks and also many of the specific details of the project, this allows for problems to be seen sooner and also plan for when these risks are to occur.
Have a Contingency Plan
Finally it is crucial to have a contingency plan in place if a risk escalates. The main purpose of this plan is to identify reasons why this type of risk is not going to happen and being able to create procedures, and also roles and responsibilities in place. Being able to do this will help be able to reduce or eliminate the risk faster and easier.
Conclusion
As shown, risk management is a very important skill to have as a project manager and also as a team member in the project. Being able to do tasks from maintaining a risk register to having a type of contingency plan will help be able to identify the many types of risks that are going to occur throughout the project and take action to reduce the impact. Also, we discussed the different types of risks that occur in the project which are Schedule Risk, Cost Risk, and Performance risks and how they can have an impact on the project, when it comes to not planning the time for the task or properly estimating the cost of the budget. With project risk management, it is important to fulfill these steps to have a pleasant and good delivery of the project.
