Project Risk Management: Identifying and Mitigating Common IT Project Risks
Introduction
Project risk management can be difficult to navigate, identify and mitigate, but as a project manager, the key to project success lies within mitigating risk and having a well rounded understanding of the concepts and tools you can use to excel in project risk management. In this blog post, we will provide a well rounded understanding of project risk management in a IT context, as well as provide you with tools and tips for you to succeed in your next IT project.
Understanding Risk Management
To equip yourself with the tools necessary to succeed in IT projects we must have a well rounded understanding on project risk management and what good risk management entails. As we know IT projects may require different requirements, or a different approach that other projects may now, a common example of this can be communication, for example often communication amongst team members may often be conducted remotely. With this being said, understanding that IT projects are a bit different we also know many risks that may not occur on other projects may occur in IT projects more frequently or must be handled different, in the example mentioned earlier understanding that communication being conducted remotely can bring many issues such as, cultural differences, connection issues, and other forms of miscommunication and knowing how to handle this is essential.

So now lets talk about risk management itself, risk management is a process of identifying, preparing and responding to different risk that may occur throughout the entire process of your project, especially those that may heavily impact your objectives. This process involves a heavily proactive approach, so planning is the key word here, and thus most of risk management should occur in the planning stage of your project, possibly during scope definition. Risk management often is carried out in some form of iterative process, where we identify potential problems, analyze these different risk, act upon them, whether this is preventing these risk or if they occur, being able to fix them, then monitoring these potential risk, and finally being able to have control over these risks.

Common IT Project Risks
As mentioned in the definition, preventing risk is an important factor to the success of your project, and as an IT professional you must know at least the most common forms of risk that can occur. In this portion we will discuss the potential risk that may occur in IT projects and examples on how these can occur so you can proactively plan for these and have a deeper understanding on the planning aspect of risk management:
Miscommunication: As mentioned earlier, miscommunication can be a great player in IT projects, and with this, many problems can arise from this. How can these occur, in the world of IT where often the communication amongst team members is carried out remotely, there are many problems that arise from carrying this communication out remotely, for example choosing the wrong software to carry out team meetings such as discord for professional work related conversations, where the tools offered may not be completely refined to help engage team members fully. Another example of miscommunication can be towards stakeholders instead of team members, where this can cause goals to shift unnecessarily or erroneously.
Scope creep: Scope creep is when project requirements tend to increase throughout the project, this is also often referred as requirement or feature creep. This can occur for many reasons, like unclear requirements, or drastic changes in scope, and often when a project only had a 5 requirements or features and later these become 10. Scope creep can cause budget issues, deadline delays, or the final product may not meet the intended goal. To avoid this you should keep close communication with stakeholders, as well as being transparent on all decisions, errors or requirement changes that may occur and be able to adapt accordingly.
Technical issues: Of course we know that IT projects heavily rely on complex technologies, but understanding that though these technologies may be cutting edge, and extremely sophisticated, integrating these can be extremely difficult, and underestimating the difficulty of this can be a huge mistake. Creating guides to ensure all members can easily set up technologies, create accounts or use the technologies you and your team will be using throughout the projects cycle is a great way to prevent major technical issues from arising. Remember failing to due so will heavily delay project deadlines, quality issues and could even cause resource issues.
Though there may be many more risk and issues that can arise in IT projects, we believe these are the 3 main ones you and your team should heavily focus on when planning your next project, since these are easy to fix, but also can cause serious problems down the road.

Conclusion
In conclusion, understanding the importance project risk management is to the success of your project, being able to identify, analyze, act, monitor and control of different risk and problems that can arise will ensure your projects success. We discussed how project risks management works in an IT field, and the most common most impactful types of problems that arise in IT, which were miscommunication, scope creep and technical issues. We also discussed how these impact the overall project, requirements, scope and other aspect as well as provided some tips on how to prevent these. Remember that the most important aspect of project risk management is prevention, and in succeeding in preventing risk, your project will also succeed.
